The Thames Water Tideway Tunnel ( alias 'the Super Sewer') was used for the first time this week, with some overflow going into it, rather than into the Thames. The Tunnel will be in full use next year after a construction project lasting more than ten years. It starts at the Acton Storm Tanks and runs east, following the line of the river, to treatment works east of the City. Overflows from sewers are stored in the Tunnel and then treated before being released into the Thames. The Tunnel passes under the gardens of some Emlyn Road properties 25 metres down. They are pleased to have received payment from Thames Water at last for the compulsory purchase of their subsoil.
